I was very excited in 1973 when Mom took 11-year old me to see Jerry Lucas speak at the Detroit Public Library. Mom was new employee at the Library – it was her first full-time job as a mother- and we drove the 40 miles into Detroit in her rattly Dodge Dart.
Nice story Will. I did not know your Mother worked at the Detroit Library. I had a much older relative - Maud Payne who graduated from The University of Michigan in 1916 and worked at the main public library in Detroit for decades - from at least 1930's to the late 50's or early 60's. Missed your Mom by a decade or more.
I obviously did not know that about your relative. My mom only worked in Detroit for 18 months or so, as she got laid off in what were, as you know, fiscally challenging times for the city of Detroit. She did love that job, however. The DPL was a pretty fantastic institution....maybe it will be again? FWIW, Fred Guttman lives in Detroit....in quite a beautiful, affordable neighborhood, too:) Also, I love your pictures of Pierpoint.
Very nice, and thanks Will. Impressive that you got the words "poppycock" and "balderdash" together in a single sentence.
You can tell I've been reading a PG Wodehouse novel:)
Beautiful concluding paragraph and oh, so very true.
